Why Emerge Collaborative?
Because we saw that young adults are leaving the faith.
Across the U.S., young adults are walking away from the church in record numbers — often within their first year after high school. Decades of research confirms what parents and pastors have seen firsthand: Gen Z is leaving the church faster than any generation in history. This reality isn’t just a statistic; it’s a heartbreak for families and a wake-up call for the church. As professionals in college ministry and student life, we saw this happening across six different universities, and we wanted to find out why for ourselves.
Because we wanted real answers, not just speculation.
We conducted a comprehensive study to uncover the real reasons behind this trend. We asked young adults between the ages of 18 and 23 who consider themselves “done” with church what has driven them away. Much of what they said was what we expected based on our anecdotal experience. But one theme emerged that surprised us profoundly. Parents are often told they’re powerless once their kids leave home, and that their kids don’t care what they think. But our research with young adults and a meta-analysis of the existing research shows the opposite: Parents remain one of the most powerful influences in their child’s faith journey — even as their children emerge into adulthood.
Because we found that parents are vital … but under-equipped.
Our study — and others’ research on emerging adult spirituality — revealed that parents are a critical factor in a young adult’s spiritual resilience, especially during seasons of doubt, instability, and questioning. Yet most parents feel unprepared to nurture identity formation and faith growth in emerging adulthood. It’s not about controlling choices or forcing church attendance; it’s about knowing how to stay connected, speak with wisdom, and create a soft landing place when life gets hard.
Because we saw a need for a tailored solution.
Emerge Collaborative exists to bridge this gap. We give parents the insight, tools, and encouragement they need to walk alongside their young adults in faith. Our resources, courses, and coaching equip families for the college transition so parents can release their kids with confidence, without losing connection. Partnering with us means giving young adults the faith-filled support they need for a lifetime, not just a season.
Because we are research-driven and hope-filled.
We’re not guessing. We’re committed to rigorous study, tested strategies, and practical tools — all grounded in the belief that God is faithful in every generation. Our mission is simple: to care for young adults by equipping their parents.
